This is probably the most charming time to visit the upper Hunza valley.
The Valleys Turns to Yellow and Gold
By late October, the first signs of autumn appear along the Hunza River. Poplar and apricot trees, which once stood green and vibrant, slowly shift into shades of amber and rust. Against the snow-dusted peaks of Ultar Sar and Rakaposhi, these colors explode with contrast nature showing off before winter closes in.
The locals are gathering leaves for their Caws and other assets. Walking through villages like Altit or Ganish, you can hear the crunch of dry leaves underfoot and see locals sun-drying apples and apricots in their courtyards. Children chase each other through golden fields, while elders sit outside their stone houses sipping tea, watching another season pass with calm acceptance.
There is no need to worry about the cold in the autumn season, you just need a simple jacket and a hoodie that will cover you, and the weather will be very nice. Every glance of the Karakoram Highway just looks like Alaska.
Located in the shadows of the mighty Karakoram mountains, Hunza has in the last decade become the ‘new Murree’ of Pakistan, as hundreds of thousands of tourists, desperate for a break, flock to the valley to enjoy its melodious scenery.
The beauty of Fall in Hunza just left us speechless and staring at the trees and mountains. The slow and beautiful change of green foliage to vibrant yellow, golden, and red sit perfectly in contrast with the turquoise waters of the Hunza River. Seated on the riverbank at dawn, this captivating grandeur of nature not only nourishes the soul but also alleviates all worldly anxieties.
A panoramic view of four of these peaks, all in one breathtaking tableau, can be seen from the Ganesh village, one of the Hunza’s oldest settlements located 90 kilometres from Gilgit. This is where I gaped at the first rays of the sun falling over Rakaposhi, before proceeding to Karimabad.
Passy Valley in Fall
If you seek the essence of autumn in Pakistan, look no further than the blue skies and golden cornfields of Gilgit-Baltistan. Passu village in autumn is a place where time seems to slow down, and nature’s beauty takes centre stage, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of the world. The tranquil waters of the Passu River meander through the valley, reflecting the changing colours of the season.
In Hunza, autumn doesn’t just paint the valley — it teaches you to pause.
To breathe in the mountain air, watch the colors change, and remember that beauty often comes right before silence.
